Husbands Won by the Wives

(I would like to preface this with a word to single women that are dating men that do not believe this word.  This testimony is not for you.  I would suggest you read II Cor 6:14-16 and get the will of God for your life.)

I believe God would have me share with you how He led me to walk with my husband when he was an unbeliever.

My husband Jack grew up in a Catholic family.  He left the church when he was 16.  He had told me he didn’t want to be a hypocrite and wasn’t interested in any one’s opinions.  I was born again and speaking in tongues.

I began attending Water of Life Church in 1984.  I had been married only a couple of years and was expecting our first child.  The Spirit of God almost immediately began instructing me on how to walk with my husband.

One of the first verses God ministered by the Spirit through Doyle was John 6:44;

No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

This verse set me free.  I was always taught in both the Methodist church and the Charismatic Churches I had attended it was my responsibility to witness to unbelievers.  In fact, there was a common saying, “What if you are the last person to talk to someone and you didn’t witness to them about Jesus?”  This verse speaks otherwise.  I cannot save anyone.  It is the Father that draws them to Jesus, we cannot.  All I had to do was walk in the Spirit and He would direct me in what to say and when to say it.

The second verse God ministered to me was 1 Peter 3:1;

Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; (conversation is behavior; Young’s Concordance)

Notice that we still are in subjection to our husbands even if they do not obey the word.  And the husband may be won by our behavior, not our “preaching”.

Doyle also tells a story of a women coming in late, who said she threw a bag of popcorn in the microwave for her husband and child’s dinner so she could attend the bible study.  This was not an example of a godly woman.

I took these things to heart.  I did not “witness” or “preach” to my husband.  To be honest I had nothing to say, because the Gospel is the power of God, and I had no power to show him.  If he asked me a question I would answer him, but there were very few questions.  I was not at church every time the door opened.  Jack was a restaurant manager and worked a lot of hours.  If he was home, I made sure I was home with him.  I made an effort to be a wife, not a room mate.

One evening Jack called me from the restaurant and remarked that he believed a group from Water of Life was there having dinner and described them to me.  It was Doyle and the group that went to the TV station to film the broadcasts.  Jack remarked how polite and easy they were and good tippers.  (Anyone that has been in the food industry knows religious groups are usually poor tippers.)  I did not know it at the time, but God was working.

 The group stopped there again a few weeks later and afterwards Doyle caught me in the hallway, said that he had met Jack, and that God had sent him “fishing”.  I kept quiet, except in prayer.

 Jack is better at sharing the rest, but I will share this.  One night, very late, God started talking to Jack, when he was alone in his car.   The next day while I was getting dinner ready, Jack said “I’d like to go with you on Sunday and see that church you are going to.”  We went and God began immediately ministering to him.

 The Father, by his Spirit led Jack to Jesus, I did not.  My responsibility was to obey the word, seek the Kingdom and walk in the Spirit.  God knows what He’s doing and He never makes mistakes.  We just have to trust him.
